The menace of drug abuse

Source - Here
Few days back I watched the movie ‘Udta Punjab’, and I was deeply affected by the cruelties ‘drug abuse’ can have on anyone’s life. Though it was just a movie, a piece of fiction with manipulations but it had a message with strong shades of truth.

Practice of drug abuse revolves around money, power, euphoria, a false surge of energy and relaxation. Along with this fallacious ecstasy, it deeply ruins the normal physiology of our body. I have seen entire generation falling prey to alcoholism, substance abuse. Yet nobody wants to wake up to this menace. It is silently gripping and depressing our society, yet nobody wants to talk about it.

It is not just the tale of state Punjab, the entire nation is slowly crumbling to clutches of substance abuse. The menace of substance abuse is highly prevalent in our society. For almost 4 years I have worked in a Sugar industry located in UP, during my tenure there I couldn’t spot a single person, whether literate or illiterate, not on any  kind addiction be it tobacco or alcohol. I have seen my mother’s distant cousin’s entire family, father and his two sons, dying because of alcohol abuse, they were educated, earning good, well reputed in society, with all these highs they couldn’t bother to care for their health, end of life due to severe system disorder.

Another appalling factor is that even children of tender age 9 are falling to the dreadful traps of different abuses. Below report and statistic from Times of India.

The various high one gets when on drug produces more than double the feeling of lowness, loneliness and depression when one is out of its effect, which eventually increases the desire to take more of it.  The drug abuse has even raised the incidence of suicides. Have a look at below statistic, source The Hindustan Times.

It is so painful to see beautiful dreams getting shattered due to some of our wrong choices and habits. The one and only savior is ‘PREVENTION’, it is the keyword. Eradicating this menace from the society is challenging task. But such frightful figures will do come down when youth starts recognizing the ill effects of substance abuse. Awareness can bring in lot changes. But efforts need to be consistent and synchronized. Let us pledge to extend our help in whatever way possible. It can be volunteering at a rehab center, helping out nearest NGO working on substance abuse or taking out time to spread awareness. The nation stands tall on the youth, by no way the young generation should crumble to such frightful fate.

It is really sad to see how youth is actually destroying themselves. Awareness and prevention is the only savior.
