Humayun’s Tomb (Part - 1)

The Paradise of Humayun's Tomb

1.     It is one of the most beautiful tourist attraction in Delhi, and is also included in Unesco’s World Heritage Sites.
2.     The Splendid structure of Humayun’s Tomb is the first Mughal Building constructed in India, with the impressions of elegance that could make a mark.

3.     The tomb was built by Humayun's widow Bega Begam, popularly known as Haji Begam.

4.     The architect of the building Mirak Mirza Ghiyas was of Persian origin. The architecture of the tomb is inspired by Persian architecture.

The Entrance

5.     In addition to Humayun and some members of his family, several rulers of the Mughal dynasty were too buried in the mausoleum.

6.     Humayun’s body remained buried at his palace in Delhi for some time and then was exhumed and taken to Sirhind in Punjab where emperor son and successor Akbar was at the time. It was brought back to Delhi and was buried in this magnificent tomb sometime later.

7.     The tomb is built in red sandstone, but to provide some variation, some yellow and black sandstone has been used. It is set in the middle of a geometrically arranged garden. According to Islam, paradise or jannat is a place set somewhere in the middle of a garden from where a water stream flows. The style is called the Char Bagh Garden Style.

8.     Based on the description of Islamic Paradise Gardens, the tomb is octagonal in shape, and crowned by high colossal double dome.

9.     The interior of the tomb chamber resolves into a group of compartments, the largest one in the center containing the cenotaph of the emperor, with a smaller one at each angle for the members of his family. Each room is octagonal in plan and they are connected to one another with diagonal passages.

10.  The entire structure is very intricately planned and executed, with sound knowledge of shapes, pattern and design. To help students understand shape, size, geometrical patterns, various schools trips are too organized here.  To enable them connect with history and learn as much as possible.
